Should I Homeschool My High Schooler?

You may have felt qualified to homeschool when the math problems were 2+2 and the reading was “cat sat on a mat” but now that your student is entering high school age, homeschooling may feel like uncharted territory. You might just have some questions like these:

  • What if I don’t remember enough algebra?
  • How do I figure out transcripts, credits, and diploma?
  • What are we going to do about college?

These are all great questions for the parent considering whether to homeschool a high school age student. The answer can vary based on your unique circumstances. But the one important thing to remember about this stage is that you don’t have to do it alone.

Homeschooling algebra (or any tough subject)

.
It’s one thing to find a really good curriculum, but there are also more options than ever before for your student to take a class from a teacher who knows their stuff. Some options might include online or distance learning classes, from sites like Khan Academy, Aleks, Veritas Online, or one of the providers on HSLDA’s list.

For years we’ve offered a la carte on-campus high school classes here at our site in Oregon City. Wherever you’re located, consider looking into a local co-op or private school, or even a public school to see if your student can attend a single class.

If your student is a junior, dual enrollment at a local community college can also be a great option. If your student is struggling in a subject, you might try a tutor who can help them understand and excel in a difficult subject.

Tracking Credits & Transcripts

.
The main thing to remember is to keep careful records of all your student’s work.

A resource like our diploma program can be an excellent way to keep track of credits and finish with a completed transcript. We offer quarterly meetings with an advisor who is available to consult on curriculum and credits. In addition, your advisor can serve as an academic reference on future college or scholarship applications. You’ll also receive a continually updated 4-year transcript at the end of each semester, and a signed diploma upon graduation.

Though you can certainly homeschool high school without this kind of program, many parents find it to be a great help. There are a few other trustworthy places that offer a transcript and a high school diploma. HSLDA, again, has a great FAQ list about this topic.

So, is homeschooling high school a good idea?

.
Well, that still depends on your individual circumstance.

But you’ll find the decision a lot easier if you’re able and willing to reach out for support and accountability. With all the resources available to learners today, homeschooling high school can be a great experience for students – and their parents.
