Home Schooling and The Circle of Life

an elderly woman and a young child both hold onto walkers, smiling at each other

She caught me in the hallway right after a group test at Basic Skills and said, “It’s come full circle for you, hasn’t it?” I said, “Yea, it really has.”

She had overheard my conversation with a few clients earlier that morning. We had tested them when they were children. Now they were parents themselves, bringing their own children to us for testing.

Full circle. Made me think of the Lion King movie, and the circle of life theme. Fine if you are at the “beginning” of the circle, even the middle is OK. But, if you find yourself at the latter part of the circle, well, the ending isn’t too cheery.

My brief conversation with the parent in the hallway made me think how quickly life moves.

Coming “full circle” can be confused with the “circle of life” idea. But, they’re not the same.

Years ago, my wife and took two of our children to a movie. For the youngest, about four years old at the time, it was his first movie.

The trailer for The Little Mermaid played for about a minute and a half and then it was over. My son said “No.” When the next preview started, he repeated his “no” again and again, louder and louder, escalating into a full-blown tantrum. He couldn’t believe the trailer had ended.  It had just started and now it was over. He wanted more.

As you enjoy this summer with your children, think of Psalm 78, especially verses 5-7.

He decreed statutes for Jacob
and established the law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
to teach their children,
so the next generation would know them,
even the children yet to be born,
and they in turn would tell their children.
Then they would put their trust in God
and would not forget his deeds
but would keep his commands.

Seeing our children and grandchildren put their trust in God—now that’s coming full circle!
