Are You Over-Invested in Your Curriculum?

The holidays are long past. Now that you’ve been back to schooling for a month, how’s that textbook or curriculum working- the one you found so frustrating and were ready to throw out around Christmas break?

Did you decide to just stick with it, to just make it work somehow? Did the effort required to change books in the middle of the year seem too much? Or was there another reason?

Years ago a parent told me that she felt the grammar book she had used with her elementary- age student had been a total waste of time.  She had stayed with it the entire year hoping the book would improve and deliver the results it promised. It didn’t, and now she was worried her child had fallen behind. There was no getting that year back. Knowing there is a lot of overlap of learning objectives from one year to the next, I told her not to worry. This didn’t really help her stop worrying. After all, it wasn’t my daughter.  I told her to simply pick a different publisher next year.

Now, many years later, her daughter has graduated from college.  She holds a job in which the ability to communicate both verbally and in writing is crucial.  Using that ineffective book wasn’t as big a deal as it seemed at the time.

Sometimes we over-invest in our curriculum. This may be the case when we are unwilling to give it up or replace it when it is not doing the job.  Yes, it may have received great reviews from some home-school expert.  Or, your friends may have strongly recommended it.  You thought maybe it would get better. Maybe you thought the problem wasn’t the book, but you. Maybe you haven’t been using it right.

Regardless, if it’s not working, it’s not working.

If this is your experience, sounds like a change is in order. So, go ahead! There’s still a lot of time left in this school year and a lot of teaching to be done. You’re the one in charge!

Thanks for Reading!
