Curt’s Health Update

Dear Friends and Family,

Thank you for your cards, text messages, phone calls, love and concern for us. I read them all but cannot always send a response. It gives me comfort.

There are no words to adequately describe how grueling the side effects have been from the high dose chemo. Uncontrolled vomiting, edema, nausea and weakness, and we are not yet at the worst part of this journey. I researched the transplant process carefully and it still could not prepare me for how sick he would be. He has not complained once with what he is going through.

He could not be receiving better care; the nursing staff is outstanding, and Dr. Segal is a brilliant and caring doctor. We are so grateful for their expertise in stem-cell transplantation and that we have access to such a great hospital.

Toward the end of this week his white count will drop to 0. He will then be what is called “neutropenic”. He will be at very high risk for infection and will be receiving transfusions. It will get much worse before it gets better.

I am so glad I do not know the future. God knows what tomorrow brings. I am confident that God will give us the grace for what lies ahead. It has been a rough road and will continue to be, but we are together now and that is what matters the most to us.

Curt and I have had the gift of creating a thousand strands of sharing, great and small, over the years we have spent together. A thousand strands twisted into something unbreakable. Our prayer and hope are that we can have more time, adding more strands if God allows it.

Love,

Jenny

  9. Jenny, I told Curt that our son-in-law has just been through this process and I recognize all those side effects you mentioned. But I want to encourage you. Our SIL is on day 48 post transplant and is doing very well. He still tires easily but is growing stronger every day and looking forward to day 100 when they will lighten up on some of the restrictions he’s been living under. Love and prayers to you and yours, Judy

  10. Thank you so much for posting this. I have been concerned as to how he was doing. And , yes… I can vouch for how sucky chemo is for sure! Praying for him 🙏
What is the organ you’re hoping to transplant? Have you looked into living donor program if it’s kidney, or liver? Please reach out to me if you need help navigating these waters. They can be crazy. I am heading to San Francisco for living liver transplant. I have two willing donors that just need to see if they are a match. All that to say, I know these waters pretty good. 🙏🙏🙏

  12. I am so glad to see this update Jenny. I was in Walmart last night and was suddenly struck with an urgency to pray for Curt immediately which I did, and for you as well. I know how difficult it is to watch loved ones wage this type of war and how dark those storm clouds seem.
May God’s truth and light constantly sustain and strengthen you both. His faithfulness is sure and unfailing in every situation and circumstance. His love, forever present and His peace unceasing as we bask in His presence. We pray you are both supernaturally strengthened and encouraged as you go through the deep waters ahead. We pray for healing for Curt and success in this treatment. Knowing no matter what, you are both held tightly and lovingly in the Father’s hand. He will never leave you nor forsake you and there’s no better place to be.

  13. You and Curt are in my constant thoughts and prayers. You both are so courageous and strong because of your faith in the One who has you in His loving care. I love you both!

    1. Hi Jenny,

this is cousin Bob just learning of Curt’s condition (of which I’m unclear). However, wanted you to know I have you both in my thoughts and prayers as you endure what appears to be an unimaginable health event. Please include me in your updates.

  14. Jenny, you and Curt are in my thoughts and prayers and have been since this whole thing started. It was a pleasure to see you both during the graduation ceremony this year. Praise God that Curt was able to give the presentation this year! I could see that he loved every moment of it.
Thank you for staying strong in all of this. I admire that in you – both of you. God bless you and I’m hoping and praying for all the best.

    Lots of love,
    Kirstin
