Time to Let ESD Know You’re Home Schooling?

Is this your first year home schooling in Oregon? If so, state law requires that you notify your Educational Service District (ESD) of your intent to homeschool. This does not have to be done until your child is 6 on September 1.

Your notification must contain the following information, but nothing else:

  • Your name and address
  • The  names and birthdates of the children you are homeschooling and the name of the last public school your child attended or the school district in which you reside.

You are not legally required to provide additional information, i.e., the curriculum you are using, your family’s home schooling practices, etc. Nor are you required (unless you want to) to provide the above information using an on-line system provided by the ESD.  Giving your telephone number and e-mail address to the ESD is optional.

Notification is a one-time task for each child. However, if you move to another county not overseen by your current ESD, you need to notify the new ESD. Need to locate the address of your ESD? Click Here

Still need/want to test? The Oregon Department of Education has extended the deadline to comply with the testing rule to November 1, 2020. Basic Skills continues to offer remote group and private testing opportunities.
