Language Arts Summer School Intensive

For students ages 8 – 12

This intensive month of instruction focuses on handwriting, spelling and reading through Orton-Gillingham style instruction. Orton-Gillingham is one of the most widely known, structured, multisensory phonics approaches. The Writing Road to Reading (Spalding), Spell to Write and Read (Sanseri),TheSlingerland method, and The Barton Reading and Spelling System are some of the language arts programs based on the original Orton-Gillingham approach.

In this summer program, students receive daily instruction in a small classroom setting with a maximum enrollment of 12 students. All learning takes place with involvement of Auditory, Visual and Kinesthetic-motor processing. It is in the linkage of these channels that children with specific learning differences often have difficulty. Instruction starts with the smallest unit of sight, sound, and feel – a single letter. Expanding upon that single unit, students are taught through an approach that strengthens inter-sensory associations and enables the strong channel of learning to reinforce the weak. It is thorough and integrated, providing a complete language learning experience.

This unique delivery allows the student to perceive and process, then store and retrieve language in ways compatible with his/her learning difference, rather than in conflict with it.

This total language approach teaches through (rather than to) the intellect, enabling students to decode and “think through” processes which might be quite automatic for their peers without specific learning differences.

Students who will gain from this summer program include:

  • Those with average to superior intelligence who are not achieving in the skills of language – reading, spelling, penmanship, oral and/or written expression.
  •  Children with language/learning difficulties.
  • Those who show a weakness in the Auditory and/or Visual modalities which interfere with understanding and using language for spelling and reading.
  • Those with Kinesthetic Motor modality weakness that interferes with recall of the sequence of movement involved in spoken language or in letter formation for penmanship.

TESTIMONIAL

“This summer school program was a wonderful blessing for my daughter and myself. She was having so much trouble reading and it was so frustrating for her. Going back to the beginning with the vowel sounds, along with the cursive writing seemed to make the connections in her brain. It was a turning point in her education. I would highly recommend this summer school program.”
