BEGINNER'S COURSE
Becoming an Effective Writer Beginner’s Course is comprised of seven lessons in which the student will learn the fundamentals of writing effective paragraphs. Following the syllabus, your student will study an a assigned section from Format Writing, complete and e-mail a writing assignment to their writing teacher, and receive a grade and written evaluation. The following paragraph formats will be presented: example, classification, definition, process, analogy, cause and effect, and comparison.  Typically, students complete one lesson per week, but this pace may be modified at the discretion of the teacher.

INTERMEDIATE COURSE
Becoming an Effective Writer Intermediate Course is comprised of twenty-one Lessons in which the student will learn the fundamentals of writing effective essays. Following the syllabus, your student will study an assigned section from Format Writing, complete and email a writing assignment to their writing teacher, and receive a grade and written evaluation. This course begins with learning how to write strong thesis statements that lead to effective introductory, body, and concluding paragraphs. By the conclusion of the course, the student will be able to write seven types of five paragraph essays.   Typically, students complete one lesson per week, but this pace may be modified at the discretion of the teacher.  High School Writing credit is available.  If taking a full school year, the coursework is divided into 3 blocks of 7 lessons each.

ADVANCED COURSE
Becoming an Effective Writer Advanced Course presumes the student possesses the fundamental knowledge and skills taught in the preceding courses. It is designed for writers who want to take their work to higher and more creative levels.  An initial phone conference is required to determine the direction and focus of the course. Instructional material is customized to each student. High School Writing credit is available. Admission is limited. 

Students enrolled receive the following services:

  • Access to Advanced Writer’s Facebook page to post questions, receive assignments, etc.
  • Group Office Hours online two times per month . Students' questions answered in real time by the instructor.
  • Written evaluations at teacher's discretion

Format Writing by Frode Jensen

Instruction begins with learning how to write basic paragraphs and progresses to writing five paragraph essays, book reports, business letters, resumes, and major research papers.
